Dogs are known to be man’s best friends, but the pure, unconditional love they give you, can be only felt and seen to be believed! I had been a dog lover all my life, but it was 9 years ago, when we got home this cute little Labrador pup, barely 6 weeks old, timidly looking around at the new surroundings! Soon he became a part of our family, the new baby who had arrived! As dog owners would know, he had all the naughty; at times even crazy ways, as all pups have, and used to behave just like a kid, many times to the irritation of all of us! He would tear socks, bite ball pens, run around the house, bring in lumps of mud; but his innocence would soon make us forgive him and love him no end!
Once when he was around 6 months old, I was down with food poisoning and was recuperating in bed. That was also the time when my cousin was getting married, and as I could not attend the wedding, I was a little disappointed. Adding to it was the fact that everyone else in the family was busy getting ready to leave for the ceremony. It was at this time, that this crazy little four legged animal, who was always up to something and never sat still for even a minute, came and climbed on my bed and sat at my feet with his paw touching me! Soon, everyone left for the wedding, and only the two of us were at home. I had feared that with his usual crazy childish ways, he would create a ruckus in the house, when there was no one to control him and I may not be able to get my due share of rest. But I was totally mistaken! This cute little fellow, sat quietly by my side for 4 hours! When everyone in the family left, he moved from my feet and came closer and sat with this head on my shoulder! And so he sat the entire time the family was out! It was his meal time, but he did not move! It was as if he was telling me, “Don’t worry, I am there with you by your side!” Never ever had I experienced tenderer, purer love and care, and that too from a mute animal! I had never imagined that this carefree, small pup would transform so much into a mature caring companion! I was so moved that this was one experience which touched my soul, something I can never forget.
As soon as the family returned, however, he got back to his usual ways, started running around to greet them, as if they had returned after a year long vacation and then ran inside and came out holding his bowl in his jaw, as if saying, “I have looked after her while you all were away, now please can I have my meal?”
